Gaming Consoles: New Nintendo Wii U to be launched this year

Published by at 8:21 pm under Technology and Gadgets

While browsing through other tech blogs, I came across a picture of the Nintendo Wii U – and I thought it was a tablet pc. Fortunately I was wrong (because I actually wondered why it had lots of buttons). Anyway, I bet you’ll enjoy all kinds of heavy graphic wii games with Nintendo’s sixth home console.

The Nintendo Wii U basically has three outstanding features which make it stand out from the old generation consoles. For me, it is its (a) touch screen controller, (b) more play style options, and (c) full HD graphics.

The Wii U measures 1.8 X 6.8 inches X 10.5 inches and the new rechargeable controller is about 5.3 inches high, 0.9 inches deep and 9.0 inches long (based on their website). The controller has fancy features and the most impressive is its 6.2-inch, 16:9 touch screen display which supports 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i video output. It also features a built-in accelerometer and gyroscope, a rumble feature, and pretty much what tablets have (sorry, I’m just in love with tablets right now) – it has a camera, a microphone, stereo speakers, a sensor strip and a stylus. The Wii U console also have internal flash memory which you can expand via its SD memory card slot or through an external USB hard disk drive. It has IBM Power®-based multi-core microprocessor and AMD Radeon™-based High Definition GPU too.

The Wii U also supports all Wii controllers and input devices (Nunchuk™ controller, Classic Controller™, Classic Controller Pro™ and Wii Balance Board™) – and you can connect up to four Wii Remote™ (or Wii Remote Plus) controllers. It is also backward compatible with Wii accessories and games.

With this new generation gaming console, you can play (1) using just the new controller, (2) via the TV and the controller display (note that the touch screen display is not just a second screen but a second window – meaning you can get another view or a holistic view of the game through it), (3) using motion control, (4) using the stylus, (5) with others and they can use Wii Remote plus. Pretty nice huh?

I don’t know how much it will cost but what I do know is that it will be launched later this year. I hope I could get my hands on it soon.
